How to Travel Smoothly From the USA

How to Travel Smoothly From the USA

(Why Getting Here Should Feel Just as Good as Being Here)

Planning a Costa Rica summer travel escape? You might already be picturing golden beaches, warm Pacific sunsets, and long, joy-filled days at our oceanfront villa. But before the sandals and sunhats come out, there’s another part of the journey to consider, one we think should be just as memorable. At The Point Luxury Villa in Tamarindo, we’ve welcomed guests from all over the U.S. and helped them arrive relaxed, refreshed, and ready to kick off their amazing experience from the get-go. And now, we’d love to help you do the same.

From the best airport options if you want to fly commercial to chartering a private jet to Costa Rica or even taking a helicopter to Tamarindo, here’s how to make your trip feel uncomplicated, comfortable, and perfectly tailored to your needs from start to finish.

START WITH THE BEST FLIGHT HUBS

Most of our guests fly into either Liberia (LIR) in the north or the more central San José (SJO), Costa Rica’s two international airports. The best choice depends on where you’re coming from (and how quickly you want to get your feet in the sand.)

    • Liberia International Airport (LIR) is closest to The Point Luxury Villa, about 90 minutes away by car. With nonstop flights from Miami, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, and Denver, it’s by far the most convenient choice for heading straight to the coast.
    • San José International Airport (SJO) is another great option, especially if you plan to explore more of the country before arriving in Tamarindo. The drive from San José takes around four hours and winds through beautiful landscapes. It’s perfect if you enjoy scenic road trips, aren’t in a hurry, and have a specific highlight you’d like to visit along the way.

Insider Tip: If you are flying on a commercial airline, try to land early in the day. Afternoon storms in the Green Season can sometimes delay domestic connections or helicopter transfers.

FLYING BY PRIVATE JET TO COSTA RICA

In case you ever wondered: nothing beats flying private for a smoother, faster, and more luxurious arrival. Many of our guests say that once they’ve done it, they’d never travel commercial again. And it’s not just about comfort, it’s really about the ease of it all. Private passengers use dedicated customs and immigration services, so you can avoid the commercial crowds. That means faster processing and a more discreet, super relaxed arrival.

You can land at either Liberia or San José directly from major U.S. cities like Miami, Los Angeles, Houston, New York, and Chicago. Private jet providers also offer flexible departure windows and full-service support, so your trip runs exactly on your schedule.

Want to land even closer to the villa? Some charter flights can use smaller airstrips near Tamarindo or Nosara. These require a little more coordination but feel like an adventure all their own.

Insider Tip: We can help organize your private jet to Costa Rica, from trusted operators to ground coordination. We’ll make sure you’re met on the tarmac and on your way in no time.

Whether you’re flying commercial or chartering a private jet to Costa Rica, The Point’s Concierge team can help make the transitions smooth and personalized. Planning a birthday dinner on arrival? Want a special surprise waiting at the villa? Just let us know what you have in mind!

      HELICOPTER TRANSFERS & GROUND TRANSPORTATION

Once you land, getting to The Point should still feel effortless. A private helicopter transfer is a spectacular option if you prefer to skip the drive. You’ll fly above forests and coastlines and touch down near Tamarindo in just 30 to 40 minutes.

Prefer to travel by road? We’ve got you covered there, too. Our private drivers can meet you at the airport with refreshments, help with your bags, and get you to the villa in comfort.

Insider Tip: Opt for the ultimate VIP Helicopter Transfer and you can touch down directly at The Point using one of our approved landing areas just steps from the villa. Our partners operate two sleek Bell helicopters, each with room for up to ten passengers—perfect for families or groups who want the full VIP treatment from the moment they arrive in Costa Rica.

HOW TO MAKE THINGS EASY (TIP: BOOK AHEAD!)

Summer in Costa Rica (June through August) is one of the most beautiful times to visit. It’s sunny but lush, with quieter beaches than the end-of-year holiday season. Because this is a peak period for family travel, villa dates and flights are booked quickly. Many of our guests book six to twelve months in advance, especially for private jet arrivals or helicopter connections. If you’re eyeing a Costa Rica luxury travel package with all the extras, a little head start goes a long way.

While U.S. passport holders don’t need a visa for stays under 90 days, your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your entry date. You’ll also need to show proof of onward travel (like a return flight) when you arrive. If you’re chartering a private jet to Costa Rica, we’d be happy to help coordinate your paperwork to make things even easier.

Insider Tip: Keep a digital copy of your passport, flight details, and insurance. If you want to breeze through immigration, we can also help arrange local fast-track services in advance.

          QUICK FAQ FOR U.S. TRAVELERS

            What currency should I bring?
Costa Rica’s official currency is the colón, but U.S. dollars are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas like Tamarindo. We recommend bringing a small amount of cash for tips or small purchases, and using cards for everything else. ATMs are available in town if you need to withdraw local currency.

Will my phone work in Costa Rica?
Yes, though it’s worth checking with your provider about international roaming charges. Many travelers opt for an eSIM or local SIM card for better rates. The Point has strong Wi-Fi throughout the property, and our team can help you get set up with local sim option if you prefer to be connected on outings, as well.

            WHAT TO PACK

Packing for Costa Rica summer travel is all about comfort and ease. You’ll want light, breathable clothes for the day, a few resort-chic options for dinners by the ocean, and a swimsuit (or three). Don’t forget reef-safe sunscreen, a sunhat, and your favorite sandals, although those are all easy to find in Tamarindo after you arrive.

If you’re planning nature hikes or waterfall visits, bring closed-toe hiking shoes and a light rain jacket, just in case. Most essentials are available in town, but we recommend bringing your preferred skincare, chargers, and any medications. Our villa has beach towels, yoga mats, and even bug spray, so there is no need to overpack.
